Description: |
| The invention is a method of firmly affixing the vials while also allowing them to be adjusted as needed. The result is achieved via a flanged holder for each vial, where the vial is imbedded in cement in the hold and the holder can be adjusted for level, or removed altogether for replacement of the vial. The preferred construction of the level is from cast aluminum although wood could also be used.Julius Sand reportedly began making levels and other mason's tools in 1895; a search failed to turn up any evidence of the business prior to 1909 when it was already known as "J. Sand & Sons" (an ad in the June 1909 "Bricklayer, Mason & Plasterer", page 145, is the earliest evidence we have found). The sons were Robert, Julius Jr., and Frank. The elder Sand died in 1919. In 1943 the business was sold to Unit Rail Anchor Co. and rolled into Hubbard Tool Co. of Pittsburgh, operating separately as "Sand's Level & Tool Co." In 1948 the Sand operation was moved from Detroit to Clinton, Indiana. In about 1957 the Sands business was acquired by Harmon Machine Co., of Wichita, Kansas, and was acquired by Kraft Tool Co. in 2005. As of 2024 Kraft continue to manufacture Sand's levels under the Sand name. |
