| This patent constitutes a revival of Hornblower's compound engine, which could now be improved upon because Watt's patent GB-178,101,306 had expired. In this type of engine, often called a Woolf engine, the steam moves directly from the high pressure cylinder to the lower pressure cylinder without passing through a receiver. In the design of this patent, the first cylinder is enclosed within the second cylinder. The outer cylinder is filled with enough oil that when the piston is at its greatest height in the inner cylinder, the oil fills the outer cylinder above the lower rim of the inner cylinder. |
