Wikipedia article on Marc Isambard Brunel
Description:
The inventor is best remembered now as the father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but he was also responsible for inventing the "tunneling shield", a cast iron caisson used to protect miners as they dug tunnels. Brunel's father founded the Thames Tunnel Company, which successfully dug the first tunnel under the Thames River.
