Description:
This is a fairly simple butt gage with some very clever ideas. This piece eschews the fence on the end of the arm used on the Marden gages and their clones, and instead adds a second point on the main arm that references off the back of the head. This is the same basic idea that would later be used to great effect in the Fulton Patent gage (386,428).

These gages were produced commercially, but are quite scarce. The gage as produced was very different than the patent drawing. Instead of the boxy-looking thing in the drawings, the actual production piece used a small wooden block with two short, round arms. The new design is considerably more compact and visually appealing than the original.
