Description:
This is the US equivalent of British patent GB-189,625,325, granted 1896-11-11. The patent covers the use of a strong flexible cable inside a flexible tube to transmit mechanical motion, such as to caliper brakes on a bicycle. This arrangement is known as a Bowden cable, and this patent shows that it is named after Ernest Bowden and not Raleigh bicycle founder Frank Bowden. This patent slightly preceded the development of the freewheel sprocket which would encourage the use of caliper brakes and hence Bowden tubes. Freewheel sprockets were soon followed by geared bicycles, which came to use Bowden cables to select the desired gear. Sometime between 1900 and 1904 this invention was licensed to the Raleigh Cycle Co.
