Description:
The groove in the tapered bar is primarily to reduce weight; the studs in the movable jaw are to prevent rattling. The ferule has a tubular extension which carries the strain to the end nut.

Whitcomb and his brother Carter were partners in a company that produced machinists tools including iron planers, and a letter copying press.
