Description:
The faces of "dogs" in a swinging frame bind against opposite faces of the main shank to hold the adjustment; a spring holds that structure in the gripping position, and allows the relative motion necessary to prevent the jaws from "sticking" to pipe.

The claims were re-worked in reissue patent RE14,791.

A 12 inch long quick-adjust pipe wrench manufactured by WALWORTH appears to correspond to this patent, although no documentary evidence has been found to confirm the connection.
