The inventor had earlier been granted a patent for a "Gravitating Plumb and Level", pre-Confederation Canada patent XC-853. This 1872 patent is primarily of interest because it gives the inventor's full name—also found in Cole's birth record—and because it establishes that he was still in Brockville in 1872.
