USPTO press release commemorating this patent
Description:
This innovation is a traffic signal that indicated "stop" and "go" in two directions but also stopped traffic in all directions in between changes. The words on Morgan's signs, of course, would eventually be replaced by red, green and amber. This patent is of additional interest because Morgan, the son of former slaves, was one of the few early African-American patent recipients; he received other patents as well, including one for a gas mask that was used during World War I.
