Description:
The patent is a refinement of Bessolo's March 6, 1923 patent pipe tongs (no. 1,447,920) designed for working with rotary oil well drill stems, tubing and casing.

In this patent, a spring latch holds the closed grip of the "chain" surrounding the work piece.

There is not sufficient evidence to know if Bethlehem Shipbuilding of San Pedro, CA incorporated this feature into the Bessolo Rotary Tongs they were producing in the early-mid 1920s.
