Description: |
| This tool is used to contract a split rim as used in early automobile wheels, in preparation for repairing the tire, especially at roadside. A 1936 biography of the inventor says, that he was "responsible for producing the Usher Automatic Planer Stop and the Usher Universal Rim Tool, an accessory that has come into general use throughout the automotive industry." We know that the planer stop (see, e.g., patent 1,606,542) was manufactured by Lamb Knitting Machine Co., and it is likely that that firm also manufactured this tire rim tool. A search for anyone else manufacturing this rim tool failed to turn up any information. Usher's invention was not unique; see, for instance, patent 1,500,900. |
