Description:
The claim of this patent centers on the combination of the concave cross-section of the bit and the semi-conical threaded lead. This allows the cutting edge to extend nearly to the tip, so that material is removed from the onset of the cut. The purpose is to minimize any tendency to split the wood and ease the entry of the gimlet. Similar to Percival's patent of 1835 (9169x) and L'Hommedieu's patent of 1838 (627).

Joseph Middleton referenced this patent when applying for a patent on a bit of similar appearance (407868).
