Description:
This patent proved to be quite important because it replaced a complex arrangement of belts, pulleys, shafts, etc., to feed the carriage past the sawblade, replacing it with a long steam-cylinder holding a piston that is directly coupled to the log carriage. Slide-valves are used to regulate the forward and reverse motion. For a steam-powered sawmill this mechanism proved to be highly effective, controllable and reliable. See patent 360,972 for a subsequent improvement.
