Vintage Machinery entry for H. H. Scoville
Description:
This atmospheric hammer design was written up in the 1876-09-16 Engineering News, which said that "a hammer built under this patent is now on exhibition in Philadelphia". That exhibit was by H. H. Scoville. We could find no evidence that Scoville, or anyone else, ever manufactured it. This patent was subsequently improved in patent 264,859, and the fact that Butterfield improved his design does provide indirect evidence that his original hammer design was used.
