"Vintage Machinery" entry for American Tool Works Co.
Description:
Claim:

In metal drilling machinery there is usually a drive-shaft for imparting the desired rotative and feed movements to the drill-spindle, which drive-shaft rotates substantially continuously during the operation of the machine. There is also usually a train of gearing connected with the drive-shaft and continuously rotatable during the operation of the machine, for selectively rotating an elevating screw or an elevating nut in reverse directions for raising or lowering the drill-arm. In drilling machines as heretofore constructed this latter train of gearing has been directly connected with the driving means for operating the drill spindle, and, consequently, rotating throughout the time of operation of the machine.
