PORT'S UNIVERSAL WRENCH (FLICKR)
Description:
The tool is based on Henry Port's Nov. 30, 1875 wrench patent 170,492, with a nod to his Dec. 11, 1883 combination tool patent 290,106. In this patent, the auxiliary tool pieces are clamped between the movable and fixed jaws of the wrench. A known example of the combination tool based on this patent was produced in France, and a Sept. 1892 description of "PORT's UNIVERSAL WRENCH" calls it a "recent French invention." Port's Dec. 31, 1891 German patent application ("Universalwerkzeug") gives his address in Paris. U.S. patent 496,168 focuses on the parts used in the bench vise application.

The specifications for British patent GB-190518116 refer to this patent in relation to the movable jaw adjusted by a central screw and sliding on parallel side shafts.
