Description: |
The head has a flat jaw for nuts, a hook jaw for pipe. The movable jaw has a flat side for nuts, and a pivoted spring-loaded pipe gripping jaw with a slot and grooves for a removable cutter wheel. The cutter sits loosely in that slot and grooves.
Advertised as the AGR'L ENGINE WRENCH. The wrench evolved and stayed in production for several decades, in direct competition with the Bemis and Call combination nut and pipe wrench. Some of the early production is marked with multiple patent dates including July 10, 1866 (most likely the Boardman patent no. 56,166 produced by Tower and Lyon) and this patent. Advertisements published in 1891 refer to the wrench as recently introduced by Tower & Lyon. Tower and Lyon ENGINEER'S WRENCHES bear multiple patents reflecting Donohue's subsequent refinements in patents 238,369, 268,784, and D19,412.
James McLaren's Nov. 20, 1866 patent (no. 59,852) is another similar design. |
