Description:
The innovation in this spindle is to vary the number and size of the bearing balls, which was found to nearly eliminate helical tracks caused by vibrations in the spindle. The ball bearing assemblies are used in pairs. The illustration shows a spindle with three pairs of bearings: the tool-end bearing has 22 balls, and the immediately adjacent bearing has 21; the intermediate pair of bearings has 22 and 19 balls; the third pair of bearings have 14 balls in each. In addition, the spindle diameter is varied between each pair of bearings to further improve surface finish.
