Description:
The rights to this significant advancement in bridge design were immediately acquired by the Corrugated Metal Co., of East Berlin, Connecticut, which in 1883 changed its name to the Berlin Iron Bridge Co. The success of this design was enhanced by the development, over the next couple of decades, of the Bessemer steel process that lowered the cost of the raw material, and the pneumatic riveter, which allowed trusses to be built on site and with much lower labor costs.
