My invention relates generally to metal cutting machinery and more particularly to a duplex shaper and the principal object of my invention is, to provide a shaper having a ram and operating parts therefor that may be quickly and conveniently shifted so as to operate in either a horizontal or vertical plane as desired in order that the one machine may be utilized for both vertical and horizontal cutting and shaping operations. Further objects of my invention are, to provide a duplex shaper wherein the bed plate that carries the bed and ram is hinged to the cross slide so that said bed plate and the ram carried thereby may be conveniently swung from horizontal to vertical positions and vice versa, to provide relatively simple and convenient braces between the cross slide and the bed plate for firmly holding the same in vertical position or at any angle between horizontal and several degrees past vertical in order that the shaper may be conveniently employed in operations incident to the production of dies, taper keys, key ways and the like. Further objects of my invention are, to provide simple and efficient means for controlling the movements of the ram, to provide an improved form of clutch and reverse mechanism for operating the ram, to provide spring cushioning means for absorbing the shocks and vibration developed in the ram driving mechanism and further, to provide simple and efficient means for counterbalancing the weight of the ram while the same is operating in a vertical position. A further object of my invention is, to provide a duplex shaper that is directly driven by an electric motor, which motor is suitably mounted on the hinged bed plate and to provide simple and efficient driving connections between the motor and the main driving shaft of the shaper. Further objects of my invention are, to provide improved means for effecting vertical adjustment of the table of the shaper and to provide a relatively simple and efficient vise for engaging and holding the work upon the table.
