Description:
Prior to this invention, blood had to be transfused immediately after donating or else it would clot or otherwise become tainted. The patent covers the process of separating plasma from the whole blood, and transfusing just the plasma. Although he is the patent assignee rather than the inventor, Dr. Charles Drew is remembered as the discoverer of this process, and has been credited with its saving the lives of countless service men and women during World War 2.
