Description:
The head is a curved surface with a slot, comprising the "fixed" jaw of a swinging hook jaw pipe wrench.

Marketed as the JOHNSTON AUTOMATIC. 1st manufacturer attribution from Aug. 18, 1897 "Hardware Dealers' Magazine." 2nd manufacturer attribution from example of company letterhead dated Sept. 15, 1900. Fred Pfeiffer of New York succeeded Volger in 1905. Barnes Tool Co. of New Haven, CT included the JOHNSTON wrench in their 1902 catalog.
