Description:
A front-page article in 1859-10-29 Scientific American concludes, "This machine was patented by William R. Axe, Beloit, Wis., Sept. 20, 1859. For further information, address Farr & Hill, of the same place." Farr & Hill, formerly Farr, Hill & French, was a planing mill and sawmill, and we can find no evidence that they ever manufactured machinery except perhaps for their own use.
