"The article termed a 'retainer' is used for receiving tobacco in suitable receptacles or boxes, transporting the same into a hydraulic press, and retaining or holding it while it is being pressed..."

The 1862 Boston Directory has a full-page ad on page 80 for Hittinger, Cook & Co. of Charlestown, Mass., makers of steam engines and tobacco machinery. The business partners were M. Hittinger, Isaac Cook and C. E. Rymes. In 1866 the business reorganized as Cook, Rymes & Co.
