Description:
The movable jaw has an internal wedge which forces a rack on the jaw to engage a rack on the shank. The toggle at the base of the movable jaw has a pitched slot which tightens and loosens the wedge.

The corresponding Canadian patent (no CA-18,493) was issued Jan. 21, 1884.

According to Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers, 1830-1930," this patent along with Barney Ross' April 15, 1884 patent (no. 296,877) was the basis for a quick-adjusting nut wrench produced by the Sterling Wrench Company.
