Description: |
| The specifications note the advantage of casting plow parts in terms of irregular shapes and varying thicknesses, and describe the process of casting steel plow parts using cast iron molds. The parts are described and shown in the drawings -- mold boards, land slides, and shares - with flanges and holes to bolt or rivet the pieces together. The major improvement in the patent is removing the mold while the casting is very hot to gain hardness, and reduce the danger of having the castings crack.
In an 1864 reissue, the patent was divided, with the process receiving one reissue patent (RE1,705), and the parts a second (RE1,706). The reissues were assigned to Smith and The Collins Co., Collinsville, CT. Another 1864 patent (41,464) dealt with selective tempering of the cast steel parts. |
