Description:
The jaw have pivoting face pieces with motion limited by stops. This enables the jaws to adapt to different forms of objects to be grasped.

1896 and 1890 trade journal items identify the maker of the "Manley Adjustable Pliers" as George A. Church of Meriden, CT.

A known example is marked, "C. SCHMITZ // PAT. OCT. 4, 1887." The current owner surmises the manufacturer was a German firm at Solingen, Germany.
