Description:
The patent is for an improvement on replaceable / interchangeable hammer heads for lasting pinchers. The improvement is to have the shoulder of the hammer head beveled to the threads and slightly countersunk (as in the top image in the patent drawings) rather than flat (as in the bottom image). This improvement was prompted by the tendency of the screws to shear off flush with the pliers jaw.

Known examples marked UNION WHITCHER, with the patent date. The Frank W. Whitcher company produced tools and supplies for the shoe making industry.

The example shown in the 3rd attached image is lacking the screw-on hammer poll; the tapered hole is faintly visible.
