From "Scientific American"'s summary of this patent: "This invention relates to a new and useful machine for pointing the ends of the timber or bolts from which barrel hoops are split, and also for checking the ends of the timber or bolt preparatory to splitting the same into hoops. The invention consists in the employment of a double-beveled rotary cutter wheel in connection with a feed table and checking knife."
