Description: |
| Eben N. Higley was a fairly prolific inventor. This patent was the basis of the famous Higley cold sawing machine which for decades was a fixture in railroad shops. Numerous improvements to the saw were made over the years. This first patent's most important feature was the mechanism for driving the blade, which used holes near the blade rim that meshed with pins on the sides of bevel gears at the top of the blade; the bottom half of the blade did the cutting. This inversion of the usual sawing arrangement was likely to avoid having to raise the railroad rails much above the ground or, alternatively, requiring a pit for the bottom part of the machine. |
