Description:
A set-screw type adjustment works against a spring to set the position of the sliding jaw. An article in the Dec. 23, 1893 Scientific American notes "When jaws are shaped to receive a polygonal nut the handle is placed at an angle of 15 degrees to the jaw, and where the jaws are formed to receive a square nut, the handle is placed at an angle of almost twenty-two and a half degrees to the jaws."

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" identifies the Bonney Vise & Tool Works as a second manufacturer in 1898.
