Description: |
| The removable instrument is applied to the mariners' compass so as to facilitate correcting the compass for the magnetic effects of the ship's cargo and structure. A pair of permanent magnets disposed equally on each side of the pivot of the compass needle can be adjusted inwards or outwards (or in their azimuth) in order to compensate for the effects of extraneous magnetism surrounding the ship and thereby to improve the accuracy with which the needle points to the Earth's magnetic north pole. |
