| This machine is notable because it made what became known as the Knapp joint, also called the pin and scallop joint; see the images accompanying patent 122,390. In 1870 Knapp reportedly sold the rights to this machine to a group of investors who formed the Knapp Dovetailing-Machine Co. in Northampton, MA. The machine saw considerable commercial success. This design evolved over time; see patents 122,390, 388,760, and D4,302. The Knapp joint faded in popularity and was obsolete by 1900."First, I claim the pawl, N, hung to the framework, A, in connection with the ratchet teeth of the carriage, I, and operating substantially as described for the purpose specified.
