Description: |
"New and useful machine for supporting the abdomen, chiefly of pregnant women, to be called or known as Pearson's abdominal supporter..." Victoria Pearson was the true inventor; the CPIO database lists her husband, John E. Pearson, as the inventor. The patent jacket (viewable via the Library and Archives Canada link provided) has a scribbled note: "There may be some doubt as (to) whether a married woman can be a patentee. But her husband should at least join (???) for its (???) to her, and if he does so, I would authorize issue of patent. A. Beau???, 28 Sept. 1870." Parts are illegible are parts are chopped off at the right side of the scan. Below that note: "Amended Oct. 11/12th 1870 Ack'd. Referred back to Hon'ble Minister of Justice Oct. 1.", followed by "A Patent may issue to Victoria Pearson wife of John Edward Pearson of TO. H. Bernard DMJ Oct. 17, 1870". The Minister of Justice at the time was also the Prime Minister, John A. MacDonald. Hewitt Bernard was the Deputy Minister of Justice. |
