Description:
Two-piece button and related tool. One piece has a hollow cylindrical stem with flange at the end; the other piece a disc with central stem -- the stem having a reduced central portion. The "suitable instrument" compresses the hollow in the upper portion into the depressed center of the stem. This allows the button to stand erect above the fabric surface.

A May 1869 reissue patent (RE3,421) lists a subsequent assignee.

Subsequent patents (i.e. 83,669) for tools to manipulate these buttons provide evidence they were produced.
