Vintage Machinery entry for Semple, Birge & Co.
Description:
Seen in an 1877 ad from Semple, Birge & Co., and in an 1886 catalog from hardware retailer Curtis & Co. Both the 1877 ad and the 1886 catalog use identical wording ("Culver's Iron Drag Saw With Snell's Extension Shaft") and so it seems likely that the 1886 version was also from Semple, Birge & Co. An 1897 catalog from sawmill machinery maker L. M. Rumsey Mfg. Co., also of St. Louis, features the "Rumsey Iron Drag Saw. The Culver Patent." The illustration is nearly identical to that from the 1886 Curtis & Co. catalog; we do not list Rumsey as a manufacturer of this patent because it had expired by that time. A catalog from Sinker, Davis & Co., undated but circa 1882, features "Culver's patent drag saws".
