Description: |
| A typical metal marking gage, with a fascinating twist-- nested arms.
The outer arm is a tube with a wheeled marker at one end and a marking point at the other. Inside this tube rides a second arm, with another marking wheel. A single nut locks both arms at once. It's basically the same idea as used in the Schenck and Ansley compass patent of 1889 (414,875), in a marking gage form.
In addition to the novel arrangement of the arms, this tool borrows several other good ideas from previous patents: William Ross's offset head (396,371) and Cyrus Kinney's serrated wheel (229,258). All in all, this is an excellent tool.
This piece was produced commercially by the Nicholls Tool Company of Ottumwa, Iowa, as their #17 marking gage. |
