Description:
Monkey wrench with interchangeable inserts for the adjustable jaw to add pipe wrench and pipe cutter functions. Complete wrench includes an auxiliary open end wrench (not shown in the patent drawing) to tighten the jaws when using the pipe cutting insert. Webster's specifications differentiate this design from J.E. Stanwood's April 26, 1859 pipe cutter 23,792, and G. B. Phillips' May 3, 1859 sliding jaw pipe wrench 23,857. The patented feature is the socket in the adjustable jaw and the pipe jaw and pipe cutter inserts.

Manufacturer names taken from Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930." The tool was widely advertised in the decade after its introduction. Few examples survive with the auxiliary pipe cutter and pipe gripping jaw inserts.
