Description:
Claim is for the geometry of design which enables the rule to maintain minimum contact with the surface and also allow the ruler to be tilted to place the metal strip directly on the surface.

The date of this patent extends the working period of Belcher Brother & Co well beyond the reported 1877 rule working dates for the company. The location of the inventor and the name also tie this patent to 159294 as well and it is possible this is the same Henry Belcher or 1875 or perhaps a son as the signature style is different (overall appearance and use of middle initial).
