The patent addresses the shape of the head and shank of a monkey wrench in relation to strength and durability. The reverse jog bar noted in the patent is a prominent feature of Coes wrenches dating to the 3rd quarter of the 19th Century. The pin fastening the ferrule to the wrench bar was one means to overcome a weakness of the original Coes patent where the ferrule was not firmly attached to the wrench bar.

This patent was featured in early 1870s L. Coes & Co. wrench advertisements.

Aspects of this patent were incorporated into a broader 1870 English patent (GB-187000904) which also has features from other Taft wrench patents.
