| Description: | | This is a machinist's scratch gage reminiscent of the Barrett
patent (384,413) with two new and very interesting
features: a rack-and-pinion head adjustment, and an adjustable
	 marking point.

The head adjustment here is a real marvel-- turning the top screw
drives a worm gear via a pair of tiny bevel gears. This worm gear
engages a rack milled into the arm. A second screw is provided to
lock the adjuster in the desired position. This is quite a gadgety
and complex design, but it seems like it would be somewhat fragile.
The adjustable point, however, is quite simple yet useful. The
point is made in the form of a slotted blade held by a screw in the
end of the arm. By loosening the screw. the blade can be adjusted
to use like a "grasshopper" gage or a traditional marking gage. | |
