Description:
Abstract:

Relates to variablespeed gearing particularly applicable for milling and similar machines. The driving-shaft E has three wheels A of different sizes keyed to it ; these gear with loose wheels B on a shaft F which also carries a set of fixed wheels C in gear with loose wheels D on the shaft F<1>. Any one of the loose wheels of either set may be fixed to its shaft by means of a rising and falling key G which is pivoted at G<2> in a sleeve G<1>, and is pressed into action at its engaging end G<4> by means of a spring G<3> which presses on its tail. The sleeves are movable along their shafts, to bring the keys opposite the wheels to be secured, by means of a rotating cam I having a separate cam-groove for each sleeve, the connection being effected by means of pivoted levers which engage in the cam-grooves and in grooves in the sleeves. The cam is rotated by means of a hand-wheel P provided with a scale and pointer and with a locking-pin. The camgrooves are arranged to engage each wheel of the upper set in turn, first with the first wheel of the lower set in action, then with the second and third wheels in action. Each train may consist of a larger number of wheels, or additional trains may be used, with an additional cam shaft geared to the first, so that one handle still suffices for effecting all the changes. The upper shaft is driven by a pulley K fitted with an epicyclic reversing-gear comprising a double planet pinion N, a stationary wheel N', and a loose wheel N<2>; the shaft is movable axially, and is provided with keys E<2> which may be caused to engage with the pulley boss for direct driving, or with the pinion N<2> for reversing.
