Abstract:
Traction engines; motor road vehicles.-In change-speed gears for traction engines &c., the sliding wheels are moved in and out of gear by means of a single handle through the medium of a combination of a cam-slotted lever or levers and bell-crank levers. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a two-speed gear. The cam-slotted lever n is pivoted to a fixed bracket, the slots engaging the ends of bell-crank levers which operate the pinions. A movement of the lever to the left throws the wheels E, e into gear, no movement of the lever k taking place. Similarly a movement of the lever to the right places the wheels D, d in gear. A pin, placed in one of three holes y in the bracket, locks the lever in the 'in' or ' out' of gear position. Fig. 3 shows the invention applied to a three-speed gear. The slotted lever r is pivoted to a second slotted lever p itself pivoted to the bracket. The ends of the levers have overlapping lugs s, t, and, when these are connected by a pin, they become in effect one lever and operate the wheels d, e as in the former case. If now the pin be placed in the hole v to lock the lever p, the hand-lever moves about its pivot r<1> to clutch the wheels d,f together for the third speed. |
