Jeff Joslin Vintage Machinery entry for Ingersoll Milling Machine Co.
|
Description: |
Improvement in "yielding gears...capable of transmitting motion which is positive under normal conditions and yet is capable of a release in the event of obstruction, a matter which is very essential in the operation of certain machines—such as, for instance, as milling-machines." A gear is driven by a hub that transmits the rotation through a beveled sleeve; a stiff spring pushes the beveled surfaces together but allows them to slip when excessive force is applied. The compression of the spring is determined by the relative position of a second sleeve inside the first sleeve, the two sleeves being coupled by screw threads. Threading the second sleeve further into the first sleeve increases the spring compression. This mechanism allows for momentary slippage as sometimes needed when shifting gears. |
