Jeff Joslin Vintage Machinery entry for Reeves Pulley Co.
Description: |
| This patent is considered to be the first modern exhaust muffler for internal combustion engines. Earlier engines either vented exhaust directly from the cylinders, or through a muffler containing some baffles. The Reeves muffler design used series of concentric shells, each vented to the next with a longitudinal row of small holes. A partition halfway along each shell divides each shell into two cylindrical compartments, The numerous compartments are interconnected in such a manner that the exhaust gas exits the final compartment and then the tailpipe only after passing consecutively through every other compartment. |
