Description:
Quimby S. Backus was born 1838-07-23 in Bridgewater, VT. He worked for Howe Scale Co. in Woodstock and Brandon, VT. By 1861 he was working as a gunsmith, and then in a railroad shop. He moved to Winchendon, MA, and in 1868 patented a vise and founded the Backus Vise Co. to make it. In January 1873, Backus merged his Backus Vise Co. with the Millers Falls Manufacturing Co. to create the Millers Falls Co. Backus had been working out of the Millers Falls Manufacturing Co.'s plant since 1870. Backus then moved to Holyoke, MA, and founded Quimby Backus Co. to make his braces.
