| Malleable iron 'levers' interlock to form an adjustable open end wrench. Other tool functions shown in the drawing are not part of the patent. Marked E. Ripley's Patent April 7, 1857. The variants shown in the 2nd illustration are copied from "Antique and Unusual Wrenches," by Schulzes. Later Ripley patents (e.g. 29,620) enhanced and expanded the tool's functions.
Cortland Ball's Sept. 9, 1862 wrench / hammer patent (no. 36,389) and A. D. Crosby's combination tool (no. 317,738) used a similar adjusting means. |
