Description:
Adjustable step for the the "smooth jaw" of an alligator wrench; corresponds to Hawkins' U.S. patent 413,940 granted Oct. 29, 1889, German patent DE-50326 granted with effective date of June 4, 1889 and Canadian patent CA-34,269 granted May 7, 1890.

In keeping with British patent options of the time, the patent was listed in the name of a British patent agent.
