Description:
The patent is for the movable jaws, and the right - and left-hand screw that adjusts them. This arrangement keeps the center of the jaw opening in line with the center of the brace pad.

The markings on one well-preserved example read, "AMIDON'S PAT // JULY 1, 1878 MFTGD // BY SAXTON & AMIDON // BUFFALO N.Y." The date in the marking is wrong.
