Fig.2  in the colored drawings represents the "Merrick Patent" (patent no. 9030X) which Coes noted to contrast the "one-handed operation" of his design. The photo of a partially disassembled "original Coes" wrench was introduced as evidence in patent infringement law suits between the Collins Company and Loring Coes in the late 1870s and early 1880s. |  |
